In January 2010, a 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, killing approximately 230,000 Haitians and making more than 1,000,000 Haitians instantly homeless. For many, Mark included, the earthquake and ensuing media coverage brought long-overdue attention to Haiti – the poorest country in the western hemisphere. In April 2010, Mark traveled to Haiti to see what he could do to help. During his trip, Mark encountered hundreds of Haitians who were not only trying to overcome the devastating earthquake, but were also struggling to overcome hundreds of years of extreme poverty and oppression. Despite their dire circumstances, the Haitians Mark encountered demonstrated graciousness and hope beyond belief. For Mark, the Haitian people inspired a commitment to help improve their circumstances in any way possible. In 2011, Mark, his wife, Amy, and their neighbor, Schuyler Richardson, formed Changing Latitudes to raise awareness and funds for the less fortunate in our world, including the people of Haiti. In 2022, Mark and his daughter, Daisy, expanded the reach of Changing Latitudes beyond Haiti and into Guatemala, another developing country in our hemisphere. Thanks to generous friends, family and people we’ve never met, Changing Latitudes has already made a significant difference in the lives of many needy families and children. |
